Ice Dams in Indiana: Why They Form and How to Stop Them Before the Leak Starts

Indianapolis does not get Minneapolis winters, but it gets something almost as damaging: weeks of temperatures swinging across the freezing line. That freeze-thaw whiplash is exactly what builds ice dams — ridges of ice at the eaves that trap meltwater and force it back up under the shingles, where it drips into soffits, walls, and ceilings.

How a dam actually forms

Heat escaping from the living space warms the upper roof deck, melting snow from below. That water runs down to the eave — which extends past the heated wall and stays cold — and refreezes. Day after day, the ridge grows. The roof is rarely the villain; the attic is. Warm air leaking through can lights, bath fans, and attic hatches is the heat source, and missing insulation lets it reach the deck.

The real fix: seal, insulate, ventilate

Stopping ice dams means keeping the roof deck uniformly cold. That is air-sealing attic penetrations first, then insulation to modern R-values, then balanced ventilation — soffit intake and ridge exhaust — to flush whatever heat remains. Done together, these three steps eliminate most ice dam problems permanently and cut heating bills as a side effect.

Roofing-layer defenses

When a roof is replaced, ice and water shield membrane along the eaves and valleys is the critical backup layer — it seals around nail penetrations and keeps backed-up water out of the deck even if a dam forms. Indiana code requires it at eaves, and on low-slope sections we extend it well past the minimum.

If you have a dam right now

Do not chop at it — axes and hammers destroy shingles. A roof rake pulled from the ground removes the snow feeding the dam, and professional steam removal clears the ice itself without damaging the roof. Then book the attic work in spring, because the dam is the symptom, not the disease.
